Dr. Torres is a licensed counseling psychologist in the state of California. He earned his B.A. in Psychology from San Diego State University, and his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from New Mexico State University, an American Psychological Association-accredited program renowned for multicultural training. Dr. Torres also completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley.
Prior to private practice, Dr. Torres worked as a psychologist for the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of Washington, Bothell, and Cornell University. Dr. Torres’ clinical work has primarily focused on working with adults whose concerns have ranged from normal developmental challenges to unexpected, acute mental health crises. His vast experience of working with people of diverse backgrounds and his lived experience as a person of color have positioned him to effectively work with people of diverse cultural backgrounds. Currently, Dr. Torres' specializations include working with relationship problems, difficult family dynamics, and challenging life transitions. Dr. Torres also has extensive experience working with anxiety, depression, and stress.
Dr. Torres is often experienced as warm, empathic, compassionate, and personable. He describes his approach to counseling as relational, emotion-oriented, and culturally-sensitive. In therapy, he strives to create a therapeutic space in which his clients feel safe, cared for, and not alone - qualities that support his clients' capacity to process with him the difficult emotional and relational experiences that bring them to counseling. While psychotherapeutic work often requires quite the investment of one's self, Dr. Torres is a firm believer that with the right relational support and a strong commitment to change, people have the capacity to transform - to thrive, experience vitality, and create meaningful lives.
